Who is eligible for the national minimum wage?

Under the National Minimum Wage Act 1998 and National Minimum Wage Regulations 2015 (SI 2015/621), most workers over the age of 16 are eligible for the national minimum wage. There are different rates for different age groups. Exclusions from the right include au pairs (who live in the family home and share family tasks and leisure activities), family members in a business and voluntary workers (working for charities, voluntary organisations, associated fund-raising bodies or statutory bodies). However, the term "workers" does include independent contractors and other people who would not normally be treated as employees.
