In Canary Wharf Management Ltd v Edebi [2006] IRLR 416 EAT, the Employment Appeal Tribunal holds that if a statement cannot, in context, fairly be read as raising a grievance that is the subject matter of a tribunal complaint, compliance with step one of the statutory grievance procedure will be lacking and a tribunal will not be able to hear the claim.
