The House of Lords has ruled in Halfpenny v IGE Medical Systems Ltd that a woman absent on maternity leave prior to the change in the law made in 1999 could not claim that she was discriminated against on grounds of sex by not being allowed sick leave because she was not employed by the employer at the relevant time.
