The definition of "employment" in the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 covers a contract "personally to execute any work or labour", which encompasses some categories of the self-employed. Mirror Group Newspapers Ltd v Gunning (Court of Appeal, 5.11.85) EOR5C holds that for the extended definition to apply, the personal performance of work or labour must be the dominant purpose of the contract.
