Case
In R v Colthrop Board Mill Ltd, the Court of Appeal reduces total fines imposed for a serious injury from £350,000 to £200,000. In so doing, it nevertheless rejects the notion that fines of £1/2 million or more for safety breaches should be restricted to major public disasters. The reduction in fine, it stresses, reflected the relatively moderate size of the company and the fact that the injury was serious, but not fatal.
