£100,000 for hurt feelings

Record compensation for injury to feelings of £100,000, together with an additional sum of £25,000 for aggravated damages, has been awarded by a London Central employment tribunal (Chair: J R Hill) to an Asian police officer discriminated against on grounds of race, in Virdi v The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis.

Metropolitan Police sergeant (PS) Gurpal Virdi, a Sikh, was dismissed after he was accused of sending racist hate mail to himself and other ethnic minority officers and civilian staff.
