In McLaughlin v London Borough of Southwark a London South industrial tribunal (Chair: J Warren) awards over £222,000 compensation (plus over £11,000 interest) to a senior council employee who was discriminated against because of her sex when during her period of employment her work was reallocated to other officers, she was moved to less important posts in different departments and eventually made redundant following deletion of her original post.

Esther McLaughlin was appointed to the post of assistant director in Southwark council's social services department in July 1992.
