In Dyer v Commissioner of Police for the Metropolis, a 48-year-old former policewoman was awarded damages of £175,792 by the High Court in London after developing tinnitus through wearing an earpiece for undercover police work.
Laura Dyer worked with the Flying Squad and the Serious and Organised Crime Squad between 1983 and 1988 and developed tinnitus, hypersensitive hearing and the recurrence of a pre-existing ear infection, causing her to take medical retirement in 1989.
