In Capeling v Highways Agency a woman who missed out on the promotion coaching given to her colleagues because she was on maternity leave, was unlawfully discriminated against on grounds of sex, rules a Bedford employment tribunal (Chair: G Plenderleath).

Ms Capeling, an administrative officer with the Highways Agency at its Bedford office, was absent from work from September 1996 to April 1997 because of maternity leave and pregnancy-related illness.
