In order to comply with the requirements of s.99 of the Employment Protection Act, an employer must begin the process of consulting with recognised unions in advance of redundancies prior to giving individual notices of dismissal. This is the important ruling from the Employment Appeal Tribunal in the case of National Union of Teachers v Avon County Council  IRLR 55.
