Two different industrial tribunals come to opposite conclusions on whether discrimination on grounds of transsexualism is covered by the Sex Discrimination Act 1975 (SDA). In Elmes v (1) Exeter & District Council on Alcohol Ltd (2) Home Office (3) Exeter and North Devon Health Authority1, an Exeter industrial tribunal (Chair: P R Anderson) rules that transsexualism is covered and awards almost £29,000 compensation.
