Emergency volunteering leave introduced
Implementation date: To be confirmed
The Coronavirus Act 2020 introduces the right for workers to take up to four weeks of leave from work to carry out emergency volunteering in the health and social care sector during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Workers can take emergency volunteering leave once in each 16-week volunteering period designated by the Government.
The Government has announced that it has "no plans" to bring this measure into force because there are currently sufficient staff and volunteers in the health and care system. However, the Government says that the emergency volunteering leave provisions "remain an option to use should there be subsequent, more aggressive waves".
