When to use this model coronavirus furlough letter
Use this model HR letter to extend an employee's furlough as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak so that you can continue to pay them through funds from the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
Warning: From 30 June 2020, the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme closes to new entrants and employers will be able to furlough only those employees who have already been furloughed for at least the minimum furlough period of three weeks up to 30 June 2020. This means that the last date on which an employee could be furloughed for the first time was 10 June 2020, although there is an exception to the furlough cut-off date for employees returning from family-related leave (ie statutory maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental or parental bereavement leave). Only those employers that have already furloughed employees will be able to claim under the scheme from July onwards. Warning: This letter assumes that the employer has agreed an open-ended period of furlough with the employee, meaning that the employee's furlough can be extended - see Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme: Letter confirming an employee's furlough. Where the employer furloughed the employee for a set length of time or stated that furlough would end on a particular date, it should use Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme: Letter seeking an employee's agreement to be furloughed.
