Written statement of terms and conditions of employment (employee)

Author: Sarah Bull, Katie Barnes-Monaghan and Zeba Sayed

When to use this model written statement of terms and conditions

Use this model document to provide a written statement of the basic terms and conditions of employment, which employers are required to give to employees at the start of their employment. We provide a separate model statement for individuals who have worker status - see Written statement of terms and conditions of engagement (worker).

The written statement is not the contract of employment but is strong evidence of its terms. Organisation should think about whether they want to set out the main terms and conditions in a written statement, or a more detailed contract of employment which contains additional provisions. To avoid two sets of paperwork, it is usually sensible to consolidate all the information in the contract of employment. For a more detailed contract, see Contract of employment for junior employee and Contract of employment for senior employee
