Written statement of terms and conditions of engagement (worker)

Author: Zeba Sayed

When to use this model written statement of terms and conditions

Use this model document to provide a written statement of the basic terms and conditions of engagement, which employers are required to give to workers at the start of their engagement. We provide a separate model statement for individuals who have employee status - see Written statement of terms and conditions of employment (employee).

The written statement is not the contract but is strong evidence of its terms. Organisations should think about whether they want to set out the main terms and conditions in a written statement, or a more detailed contract which contains additional provisions. To avoid two sets of paperwork, it is usually sensible to consolidate all the information in one contract. For a more detailed contract which can be used when you are engaging a casual worker on a short-term basis, see Casual contract (worker).
