More public-sector employers are recruiting graduates than those in the private sector, but at lower starting salaries, XpertHR research finds.

The latest XpertHR Benchmarking research on graduate recruitment trends in 2013 reveals the following:

  • Seven employers in 10 are currently trying to recruit graduates
  • The proportion of public-sector respondents currently seeking to recruit graduates is higher than that for the private sector.

  • Nearly nine organisations in 10 plan to recruit graduates in the future. Again, the figure for public-sector respondents is higher than that for the private sector.

But how have graduate recruitment levels changed from last year?

  • Only around one employer in 10 is looking to recruit more graduates than in the previous annual recruitment round.
  • Public-sector employers are significantly more likely than those in the private sector to be recruiting more graduates than one year ago.

Poor quality of applicants is biggest problem with graduate recruitment

Across the whole economy, more than one-third of employers have experienced problems with graduate recruitment over the past two years.

By broad sector, public-sector organisations are significantly more likely to have experienced graduate recruitment problems than those in the private sector.

More than four-fifths of all employers who have experienced problems with graduate recruitment cite the poor quality of applicants

Employers confident in choice of graduate recruitment methods...

Despite the problems they report with the quality of candidates, UK employers have confidence in the graduate recruitment methods they use.

Respondents to the survey were asked which graduate recruitment methods they use, and which they consider to be the most effective

The top three responses were the same for both questions: university careers services, corporate websites and recruitment fairs.

... but are less confident on how graduates are selected

However, the survey suggests that employers are less confident in the assessment and selection methods used when hiring graduates.

The three most widely used graduate assessment and selection methods are university careers services, corporate websites and recruitment fairs.

However, for each of these assessment and selection methods, the proportion of employers vouching for their effectiveness is around half the proportion using them.
