Draft an employment contract for a part-time worker

Key points

  • Part-time working arrangements include: working fewer days per week than full-time workers; working fewer hours per day than full-time workers; and job-sharing, which is where two or more workers share one role. An employment contract for a part-time worker should set out clearly the employee's hours of work.
  • Part-time workers have the same statutory rights as equivalent full-time workers (irrespective of the number of hours they work) and, under the Part-time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000, they are also entitled to equivalent contractual benefits on a pro rata basis.
  • The contract should set out the employee's pro rated entitlement to benefits such as annual leave.
