Employ an apprentice

Key points

  • Apprenticeships are in-work training programmes under which the apprentice engages in on- and off-the-job learning and development activities that will lead to a work-based qualification.
  • Employers need to choose the right type of apprenticeship to suit their needs and will usually need to find a training provider.
  • Employers in England that pay the apprenticeship levy will be able to access levy funding for the apprenticeship. Different funding systems apply to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Non-levy paying employers can also receive government support.
  • The employer and apprentice must enter into an apprenticeship agreement that must comply with statutory requirements.
