Establish a policy on supporting employees who are carers
- Employees who are carers have the right to take time off work for emergencies in relation to dependants. All employees with the required length of service also have the right to request flexible working. Carers may be protected against discrimination if they are associated with someone who is disabled.
- Employers should consider what enhanced support they can offer employees to help them meet their caring responsibilities. Such support can result in increased productivity, motivation and retention, and reduced sickness absence and stress.
- A policy on supporting employees who are carers could, for example, highlight employees' statutory rights and set out any additional provision by the employer, such as unpaid leave for carers, a carers' network or an employee assistance programme.
