At the start of the appeal hearing, the manager conducting the appeal should introduce the parties present and explain their role, as well as the purpose of the appeal.
The manager should establish why the employee is appealing the decision on the grievance and what resolution the employee is seeking.
Where the employee has taken advantage of the right to be accompanied at the appeal hearing, legislation specifies what the companion is and is not permitted to do at the hearing.
