Implement short-time working

Key points

  • Many employers use short-time working to deal with periods during which there is a shortage of work or during adverse trading conditions.
  • The relevant legislation sets out the circumstances in which a diminution of work amounts to short-time working.
  • Employers cannot impose a period of short-time working without employees' agreement or contractual authority.
  • Employees who are put on short-time working may be entitled to guarantee payments and, in some circumstances, a statutory redundancy payment.
