Respond to a young person's request for time off to undertake study or training leading to a relevant qualification

Key points

  • Some young people aged 16 or 17 who have left full-time education without attaining a prescribed "standard of achievement" have the legal right to a reasonable amount of paid time off work to acquire a "relevant academic or vocational qualification".
  • That same right extends to 18-year-old employees who began their studies or training before their 18th birthday.
  • Young employees in England are not covered by this provision if they are subject to the duty to participate in education or training set out in the Education and Skills Act 2008.
