Select volunteers for redundancy

Key points

  • An employer that has invited employees to submit applications for voluntary redundancy should, once the final date for submission has passed, decide which applications to accept, if any.
  • If the employer has retained the right to turn down applications for voluntary redundancy, it is not obliged to make any or all of the volunteers redundant.
  • When making its decision, the employer should take into account the knowledge and skills that will be important for the future success of the organisation.
