What does consultation during a redundancy process mean?

Consultation is the process by which management and employees and their representatives examine and discuss issues that are of mutual concern. In a redundancy situation, the aim of consultation is to ensure that there is a genuine exchange of views and information in terms of why redundancies are proposed and how they can be avoided.

If the employer is proposing to dismiss and re-engage employees on new terms (which also counts as a redundancy situation for the purposes of collective consultation) the employer should attempt to reach agreement with employees and their representatives on the proposed changes, to avoid the need for dismissals.
