EU: Commission acts against Italy on retirement ages

The European Commission launched proceedings against Italy in June 2010 for maintaining different retirement ages for male and female civil servants, in breach of the principle of equal pay.

In November 2008, in a case (C-46/07) brought by the European Commission, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled that Italy's civil service pensions scheme breached the EU principle of equal pay for women and men.
