EU: Commission stresses social dimension of single market

As part of a plan to strengthen the EU single market, issued in October 2010, the European Commission has announced initiatives to protect workers' rights, including the right to strike, in the context of the economic freedoms guaranteed for businesses within the single market.

The EU single market was officially created in 1992, allowing goods, services, capital and people to circulate freely among the member states.
