Make a referral to the Fit for Work service
NOTE: A government announcement on 30 November 2017 stated that the Fit for Work assessment services will come to an end in England and Wales on 31 March 2018 and 31 May 2018 in Scotland. The Fit for Work service in England and Wales has confirmed that its referral service will close on 15 December 2017 and that any employees already referred to it by that date will continue to receive a service for up to 90 days.
- Fit for Work is a Government-funded service that provides free assessments by an occupational health professional for employees on sickness absence and recommends steps to enable them to return to work.
- An employer can make a referral to the service, provided that the employee has been off sick for the required length of time and meets the other eligibility requirements.
- If an employer has access to its own occupational health provider, it should consider the pros and cons of using the Fit for Work service instead of, or in addition to, its own advisers.
