Respond to a young person's request for time off to undertake study or training leading to a relevant qualification

  • Young persons aged 16 or 17 who have left full-time education without attaining a prescribed "standard of achievement" have the legal right to a reasonable amount of paid time off work to acquire a "relevant academic or vocational qualification".
  • That same right extends to 18-year-old employees who began their studies or training before their 18th birthday.
  • Young employees are not covered by this provision if they are subject to the duty to participate in education or training set out in the Education and Skills Act 2008.
