Employment Relations Act 1999 comes into force
Implementation date: 25 October 1999
The Act simplifies the system of additional
and special awards of compensation for unfair dismissal into a single
additional award in respect of dismissals where the effective date of
termination falls on or after 25 October 1999. It also forbids employees
working under fixed-term contracts of one year or more in duration to enter
into written agreements (whether or not contained in their contracts of
employment) to waive their right to complain of unfair dismissal on the expiry
of the fixed term. The Act can be viewed on the OPSI website.
