Employment tribunal award limits amended

Implementation date: 6 April 2014

The Employment Rights (Increase of Limits) Order 2014 (SI 2014/382) increases the limits applying to various tribunal awards and other amounts payable under employment legislation, including the maximum amount of a week's pay for the purpose of calculating a redundancy payment and the basic and additional award of compensation for unfair dismissal (which increases to £464) and the limit on the amount of a guarantee payment. Under s.34 of the Employment Relations Act 1999, the Secretary of State is required to make an order amending these limits if the retail prices index for September of a year is higher or lower than the index for the previous September. Until 25 June 2013, the amending order needed to be made "as soon as practicable", and was normally made in February, but pursuant to the changes to s.34 made by the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013, the amending order will come into force on 6 April each year starting in 2014.
