Carer's leave

The Carer's Leave Act 2023 provides for one week of unpaid leave per year for employees who are providing or arranging care for a dependant.

The Government has published the final version of the Carer's Leave Regulations 2024 (SI 2024/251) to implement these reforms. The final Regulations were published on 4 March 2024 and come into force on 6 April 2024.

The Regulations apply only to England, Wales and Scotland. Separate legislation would be needed for the right to carer's leave to apply in Northern Ireland as employment law is devolved there.
