National minimum wage to increase by 1.8%


The Government has accepted the recommendations of the Low Pay Commission in relation to the 2012 national minimum wage. The adult rate of the national minimum wage will increase by 1.8% from 1 October 2012, but youth rates are unchanged. 

The following rates will come into effect on 1 October 2012:

  • the adult rate will increase by 11p to £6.19 per hour;
  • the rate for 18- to 20-year-olds will remain at £4.98 per hour;
  • the rate for 16- to 17-year-olds will remain at £3.68 per hour; and
  • the rate for apprentices will increase by 5p to £2.65 per hour.
