Determine employees' entitlement to time off when an extra bank holiday is granted
Key points
Employees do not have a statutory right to paid time off on a bank holiday.
Whether or not employees are entitled to paid time off when an extra bank holiday is granted will therefore depend on the wording of the contract of employment.
Even where there is no contractual entitlement to paid time off on the extra bank holiday, the employer could consider providing this as a gesture of goodwill, or providing time off in lieu if employees are required to work on that day.
