Government takes cautious lineover retirement age

After a long period of deliberation, the government has finally announced how it will implement the provisions of the European Framework Directive (Directive 200/78/EC) relating to retirement ages. In a statement to parliament*, Patricia Hewitt, the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, announced that the age discrimination legislation will set a default retirement age of 65.
