Implement a lay-off
- Employers may need to use temporary lay-offs while there is a shortage of work due to adverse trading conditions.
- Employers cannot impose a period of lay-off without employees' agreement, or having contractual authority. Employees may be entitled to guarantee payments for workless days.
- Instead of laying off staff, employers may decide to "furlough" staff under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and pay them through funds from that scheme.
