If someone joins the reserve forces will his or her employer be informed?

Yes. Under the employer notification procedure, which has been in place since 1 April 2004, anyone who joins the reserve forces, or seeks to renew his or her commitment, must permit the Ministry of Defence to contact his or her employer directly to inform it of this. The procedure was put in place to help minimise problems arising in the event of compulsory mobilisation or a request for leave for training.

If the reservist considers that he or she has a good reason for not informing the employer, he or she may apply for a waiver for up to 12 months.
