Deaths down but not quite on track

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has released the annual statistics on work-related deaths (excluding members of the public)1. Fewer died at work in the reporting year 2001-02 compared with the previous year, but the figures have not returned to the levels that would have been expected had the downward trend observed in the late 1990s continued.

Provisional statistics for the year 2001-022 indicate a decrease of 15% in the number of fatal injuries among Britain's workers, with 249 deaths compared with 292 in 2000-01 (SeeOHR 93 pp.2-3 and Deaths at work up by one-third ).
